The calm state at the Coast should trigger more efforts in containing violent extremism that leads to terrorism.

Human Rights Agenda-HURIA, a human rights lobby based at the Coast said stakeholders should not relax following the tranquility and decrease of terror related incidences in the region.

HURIA Executive Director Yusuf Lule Mwatsefu said that the current situation compared to three years back has been relatively calm following major interventions by stakeholders.

Lule said that since terror networks employ different and more sophisticated ways while planning an attack, Kenyan security agencies and other stakeholders should augment their strategies.

“We should never relent, we have to strategize despite the region being calm and major terror related cases having gone down,” noted Mr. Lule.

He fully backed the Prevention of Terrorism Amendment Bill of 2018 that provides for the County Education Boards to be proactive in monitoring children progress in school through institution administrators.

The bill presented by Nominated senator Naomi Jillo Waqo is said to be aiming at bringing relevant changes to the fight against violent extremism and radicalization especially among students in schools and higher learning institutions.

“HURIA fully backs these amendments, we exude hope that they will in collaboration with relevant state and non state agencies to oversee implementation of county specific programs to counter radicalization,” noted Mr. Lule.

The human rights defender appealed to security agents, the community, human rights defenders and religious leaders to unite in addressing the issue.

Kwale, Mombasa,Kilifi and Lamu are among the Coastal counties that have embraced prevention of violent extremism and radicalization action plans while Tana River is in the process of developing one.
