Haki Africa, a human rights organisation in the country has been uplifted to observe human rights issues across all African countries.

The human rights organisation was nominated by the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights-ACHPR to oversee human rights issues across Africa with a mandate of documenting as well as reporting all forms of human rights violation in the entire continent.

Haki Africa Executive director Hussein Khalid termed the move as a major milestone for the human rights organisation which has worked towards ensuring the government respect human rights and adheres to the constitution.

Speaking in Mombasa on Tuesday, Mr. Khalid termed the global recognition as a challenge to the organisation to stretch its arms and ensure the continent observe human rights and respect the law.

He said despite all the detrimental challenges to the fight for human rights, the organisation has soldiered on leading to its global recognition.

Khalid also said that the recognition calls for a rigorous planning for 2019 human rights based programs focusing on the entire continent.

“We have been working at the Coast, in Kisumu and other parts of the country documenting and reporting all forms of human rights violation, our focus is now globally,” he said.

Mr. Hussein said that the recognition calls for more research, community engagement, social audit, human rights and law awareness campaigns, gender equality among other various angles that directly touch on human rights issues.

He appealed for a communal approach and dignified approach on security matters.

“Forceful disappearance, extrajudicial killings, gender based violence, violence against women and girls and adequate democratic space will be among our top focus in tandem with the recognition,” he noted.

He also revealed that the organisation will highlight on leadership and good governance issues in the country, the East Africa region and the entire continent.
