Speaking in Changamwe in one of the forums, Haki Africa Rapid response Officer Mathias Hezron Shipetta said that the security engagement forums are geared towards bridging the gap between the community and police.
He noted that in the recent past, police have clashed with the community on issues that would have been averted through awareness and dialogues.
“We want the community and especially youth to know their rights, procedures to be followed when they are arrested and how they can work closely with security organs for the realization of progressive human rights,” noted Mr. Shipetta.
He said that the forums will be enhanced to cover all the six Sub counties of Jomvu, Changamwe, Mvita, Likoni, Nyali and Kisauni.
“If we want to curb crime in Mombasa, we must unite Community and the police,” reiterated the human rights defender.
Shipetta however appealed to the youth in Mombasa to deter from crime.
He said that youths have been killed by police for engaging in criminal activities, adding that such security forums will provide a long term solution to insecurity.
