Human rights lobby Haki Africa want police to admit injuring one person in Vikwatani, Kisauni Sub county recently and fully compensate the victim.

Haki Africa has revealed that Karisa Juma was shot and badly injured by police officer when the officer was pursuing suspected criminal gang in the area.

Jumwa Kahindi a relative, said police had asked Karisa to take him to Vikwatani using his Boda boda, a command that the Boda boda operator obliged to.

“However, on reaching Vikwatani area the police officer started shooting, killing one person on the spot and injured two others including Karisa,” she said.

Karisa was shot twice on the stomach leaving him with serious injuries.

Haki Africa Rapid Response Officer Mathias Hezron Shipetta appealed to the police officer to cater for all the medical expenses of the victim.

Shipetta said though the human rights organisation does not directly condemn the security officer for the shooting, justice should be served.

“The police officer admitted that he mistakenly shot Karisa and the only wise thing he should do is to foot for all the medical bills,” said Mr. Shipetta.

Karisa has been receiving urgent medical attention at the Coast General Referral hospital in Mombasa.

“Police have been mishandling their firearms, recklessly shooting innocent people, this trend should stop,” noted the activist.

He said the rights organisation will follow up on the issue to ensure justice for Karisa prevails.
