The Kenya Defense Force has been accused of torturing a Tana River man whom they detained on Wednesday.
Ahmed Ali was arrested at Nyogoro along Lamu-Garsen road in the morning. The family said the security agents were heavily armed.
Ali’s brother, Qureish, said he was taken at a KDF camp in Tana Delta Sub County where he was injured and denied food.
“He was seriously beaten and suffered a broken rib,” Qureish said.
He said his brother was questioned about Al-Shabaab activities and networks.
“He denied any link to Al-shabab since he does not know them,” Qureish added.
Tana River County commander Fredrick Ochieng’ said he was not aware of the incident.
“He must first make an official report after which we can open an inquiry. If there will be a need for us to liaise with KDF, we shall do that. As at now, I don’t have an official complaint,” he said.
Muslims for Human Rights-MUHURI Chairperson Khelef Khalifa said the human rights organisation has already documented the case.
Chairman Khelef Khalifa said “human rights violations are so rampant that it is almost institutionalised by depicting Muslims as potential Al Shabaab terrorists.”
He said it is a pure state of terrorism against innocent civilians and must be stopped or will act as a factor of terrorism.
“The decision to send KDF soldiers into Somalia was illegal, immoral and clearly had a global agenda against Islam and Muslims in general,” he said.
After KDF joined the war against Al Shabaab in Somalia eight years ago, retaliatory attacks followed.
As a result, Muslim community at the Coast and Northeastern part of Kenya reported victimisation from State agencies.
Khelef said there were no enough reasons to allow KDF into Somalia.
“Former President Mwai Kibaki sent to Somalia without initially seeking approval from parliament. He must bear full responsibility for the terrorist attacks on hundreds of civilians in Kenyan territory and hundreds of our troops inside Somalia,” he noted.
Khalifa said sending KDF soldiers into Somalia has never been our interest but that of the West on unjustified wars against Muslims.
He wants Tana River KDF commandant held accountable for the torture Ali went through.
MUHURI Rapid response officer Francis Auma said KDF officers are increasingly brutalising locals.
“We are helping Ali to get an OB number and fill in a P3 form,” he said.
