Human rights defenders across the country have asked the government to uncover the controversy surrounding human rights defender Caroline Mwatha’s death.

Mwatha is said to have succumbed while trying to procure abortion at a private hospital in Nairobi.

However, human rights defenders would not consume anything related to the government’s narratives about Mwatha’s death.

Led by Haki Africa Executive director Hussein Khalid, the rights defenders said that the activist’s death has been marred by controversies and it was clear she was murdered.

He said the rights defenders will not relent until justice prevails.

“We understand that human rights defenders have become government’s soft target, government reports revolving around Mwatha’s death do not add up,” noted Mr. Khalid.

He said that unless the government unearths what transpired leading to Ms. Mwatha’s demise, human rights defenders will not devour any of the reports.

“Caroline has been threatened following her human rights work of documenting extra judicial killings within Dandora area in Nairobi, we believed her efforts led to her death,” noted an agitated Khalid.

Ms. Mwatha was a senior Officer at Dandora Social Justice Centre, a human rights lobby based in Dandora slum, Nairobi.

She mysteriously disappeared and her body was recovered at the city mortuary 7 days later.

Earlier autopsy reports revealed that Ms. Mwatha tried to procure abortion but died through the process.

However, human rights defenders are not munching through the autopsy reports insisting that the fearless human rights defender was exterminated.

Mr. Khalid insisted on a conclusive probe over Mwatha’s death.

The rights defender vowed to push for justice for Ms. Mwatha during her burial at her Siaya home on Saturday.
