The government will spend 1.9 billion shillings for the purchase of desks for primary and secondary schools in the country.
Education Cabinet secretary Professor George Magoha said the desks which are going to be made by Jua Kali sector at Sub-county level is part of the measures put in place before the re-opening of the schools.
Prof Magoha said the money was made available following Presidential directive saying the government has done so much for the education sector contrary to what is being reported.
He dismissed reports that the government has not released money for the schools as ‘speculative and promotive journalism’
Speaking in Mombasa after inspecting the level of compliance of Covid-19 protocols at the Technical University of Mombasa-TUM, Prof Magoha said a meeting of all county commissioners will take place to come with the designs of the desks for schools.
He said the country has recorded Covid-19 positive cases of below 5 per cent which is the recommended rate by the world Health Organisation before reopening the country.
“We shall closely monitor the situation and if this trend continues, we will in the next 14 days make an appropriate decision,’’ said the CS.
Prof Magoha said universities and colleges were set to re-open this September but this was shelved due to poor level of preparedness and increased cases of coronavirus infections.
He said all learning institutions must be safe and that measures such as adequate water points, social distancing in all areas and other protocols outlined by the Ministry of health must be put in place.
Prof Magoha who had earlier made a similar visit to the Pwani University in Kilifi County commended the leadership of the two institutions for meeting most of the covid-19 protocols.
