11 injured in Likoni accident


At least 11 people have been injured after they were hit by a van at Harambee area in Likoni, Mombasa.

The van transporting assorted goods including food was heading to Ukunda, Kwale County from Mombasa to supply goods in retail shops in the area.

Likoni traffic base Commander William Andai said the driver of the van hit a motorbike with two passengers on board seriously injuring them.

“He then hit a cyclist who was also heading to the same direction and further hit an oncoming tuktuk with three passengers on board,” said Mr Andai.

Andai said the cause of the Wednesday 5 pm accident is still unknown.

“The driver veered off the road hitting other four people, seriously injuring them and are currently battling for their lives at the Coast Teaching and Referral hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He said the two people in the van are among the injured.

“We cannot immediately establish what transpired but police are already investigating the cause of the accident,” Noted the traffic commander.

Andai further cautioned motorists to be very careful and avoid reckless driving while on the road.

He said lately, Likoni has witnessed tragic road accident most of them caused by reckless driving.

He said police have launched a massive crackdown of motorcycles, tuk tuk and other public service vehicles operating in the area and specifically along the Likoni-Lungalunga highway.
