Eleven people have perished in a tragic road accident in Kitui county on Saturday night.
Kanyonyoo Sub-location Assistant Chief Jacob Mueti confirmed the accident saying the family members were from a dowry negotiation ceremony in Mwingi.
“The driver of the 14 seater matatu lost control at the Kanyonyoo junction and the vehicle veered off the road, rolled several times, killing the 11 families on the spot,” revealed Mr Mueti.
He further disclosed that the matatu was overloaded according to eyewitnesses.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kitui level 4 hospital mortuary.
“The survivors were taken to Kitui level 4 hospital, Matuu level 4 hospital in Machakos county and to the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi for urgent treatment,” added Mueti.
Police are investigating the accident.
