13 perish in Siaya oil tanker blast


At least 13 people have been confirmed dead while 24 others we seriously injured after an oil tanker burst into flames on Saturday night.

The accident occured at Malanga village along the Kisumu-Busia highway where the oil tanker hit a trailer ferrying milk and veered off the road emptying the whole content.

Locals rushed to the scene to siphon oil before the huge blast occured.

Here 13 bodies were recovered at the scene.

“The figures may rise because some people cannot be accounted for since last night,” said Gem Sub county police commander, Charles Chacha.

Chacha said the incident occured at around 10: 45 pm at Agwings Kodhek area along the Kisumu- Busia highway.

“We have been cautioning people against visiting accident scenes with an aim of stealing valuables or siphoning oil, However, none would listen to the directive,” noted Mr Chacha.

He said some bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

It took fire fighters two hours to battle out the fire.
