20 people narrowly escaped death after their boat capsized in Manda Bruno area in Manda Island, Lamu County.
The survivors most of them being family members were from a day out on the last Friday before Holy Ramadan month begins, were returning home before the accident.
Lamu County Police Commandant Moses Muriithi confirmed the accident saying the boat hit a rock and development mechanical problems which forced water inside the boat.
“Eventually the boat capsized though no deaths were reported most of the survivors especially the children were injured in the accident, ” noted Mr. Muriithi.
He said the Coast guard officials, Kenya Red Cross Society Lamu branch officials, fishermen among other divers helped out the victims.
“Luckily we saved all of them, however, we need to exercise caution whenever we venture into any form of expedition especially at the Indian Ocean,” He said.
He warned locals against venturing into the Indian Ocean when there are strong tides.
Muriithi also urged fishermen to always adhere to safety rules from the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) so as to avert accidents in the Indian Ocean.
The victims were taken to various health centres for treatment as investigations on the cause of the Friday evening boat accident continues.
