Three Chinese and a Kenyan arrested over illegal possession of wildlife trophies will remain in custody for five days.
This is after a Nairobi Court on Wednesday granted police their prayer to detain Shang Li Yan, Xing Wei, Zhang Jie and David Oseko at Kilimani Police Station to allow completion of investigations.
Nairobi Senior Principal Magistrate Carolyne Nzibe directed the suspects to be held at the Kilimani Police Station pending completion of investigations. The suspects will plead to charges on January 14.
The three were arrested on Tuesday, along with a Kenyan who was also in court, after police raided their house in Nairobi’s Kilimani area following a tip-off from their neighbours.
During the raid, a live tortoise, large quantities of dog meat and game meat, leopard’s skin and ivory pieces were found. They also netted contraband goods that included cigarettes worth more than 2 million shillings and alcoholic drinks at the suspects’ apartment in Aberdare Courts.
The raid was carried out by a multi-agency team including detectives, officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Bureau of Standards and the Kenya Revenue of Authority.
