Tourism Cabinect Secretary Najib Balala has sent a message of condolence to the family of the late tourism investor Kuldip Sondhi.

Sondhi died of natural causes at his home in Mombasa on Monday morning.

Balala termed Sondhi as a “mentor, friend and father figure.”

In his public life, Mzee Sondhi was a public servant (Councillor between 2002 and 2007), and a hotelier. In private, he was an author, with 12 short stories, 17 plays, and several anthologies published in the course of his 17-year career as a writer.

One of his short stories ‘Bad Blood’, published by Penguin, was named the best East Africa story in the 1960’s. His other masterpiece ‘The Suit’ earned a similar fete.

At the turn of independence in 1963, the Orient Club of Nairobi commissioned him to couch their entry for the prestigious Annual National Drama Competition. ‘Undesignated’ scooped several awards including the best script.

Sondhi owned the Reef hotel and served as the Chairman.

He also owned the Kuldip tour company.
