Coast based journalists have strongly condemned security agents manning the Likoni ferry channel after one of their own was beaten by a General Service Unit officer on Friday.
NTV Camera person Peter Wainaina was hit hard by the GSU officer while on duty causing him serious injuries.
Wainaina was on assignment covering the situation at the Likoni ferry channel as the safety guidelines were being implemented.
Wainaina who was keenly recording the unfolding and lining clear shots for his TV station was hit hard with a rungu on his head by the rogue GSU officer.
In a video that was recorded by a colleague, The GSU officer is seen kicking Wainaina at the back despite showing his press card and holding a video camera.
Secretary General Kenya Correspondents Association and Coast Media Welfare Chairperson Maureen Mudi condemned the incident calling for urgent action against the security officer.
She said no police officer is allowed to harass and intimidate any journalist on duty and she appealed for stringent actions against the rascal GSU officer.
“I am perturbed by such assault, journalists are some of the people who are exempted from the curfew,” noted Ms Mudi.

She called on the senior Nation Media Group officials to join the efforts of ensuring the officer who assaulted and injured Mr. Wainaina is arrested and punished according to the law.
“The violence was inflicted to Mr. Wainaina even before the stipulated 7 pm curfew, police should clearly understand that just like them we are also on duty. We demand actions and nothing less,” reiterated the veteran journalist and The Star Newspaper Coast regional Bureau Chief.
Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) and The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) have equally condemned the incident calling for stern action against the reckless security officer.
Mombasa based journalists will on Saturday accompany the NTV journalist to the central police station to record a statement on the same.
