Some Mombasa based journalists were forced to plead with a Cabinet Secretary to foot their bills at a luxurious hotel in Mombasa after the hotel management demanded they pay for the food they have taken.
The group of journalists camped outside the conference room almost for the entire time the CS was addressing the Agricultural conference.
Only three dedicated journalists were attentively covering the conference.
The other group was only waiting for interview or maybe free lunch, maybe the agriculture story was not important for them at all.
Agriculture CS accorded them interview
When the Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri only spotted the three journalists he accorded them an interview right inside the conference room and invited them to join him for lunch as they discuss matters on how they can dedicatedly cover agriculture news and features from the Coast region.
Kiunjuri encouraged journalists to embrace positive highlights on agriculture, farming, livestock rearing and modern farming technology being applied in the agricultural sector which is in line with the Big four agenda of the National government, Food security.
Served full plates
The group of ‘lazy’ journalists would later go to the hotel restaurant where delicacies were served and quickly queued for the mouth watering dishes.
After munching on the delicacies, Swahili dishes, fruits and sweet tasty juices, they were handed over hefty bills.
“For us three it was an invite of the Cabinet Secretary since he was moved by our seriousness in debanking agriculture news stories and features, He wanted as to tirelessly venture into agriculture programs in our radio stations,” revealed one of the journalists
Panting and sweating
After some minutes of sweating and panting heavily without knowing who their savior would be, the hotel staff reached out to the CS who never disowned them and with all his humane behavior he shelved off the journalists from the shame.
Kiunjuri paid the bills at the five star hotel that costs between sh 1,200 to 1,700 a plate. However, the prices can be between sh. 900- sh.1,200 without fruits and fresh juices.

The Members of the fourth estate would later leave the hotel too ashamed of even thanking the CS.
When will the men and women in the fourth estate change?
Incidents not new
Some few years back the then National Cohesion Integration Commission-NCIC Chair who is the current National Museums of Kenya Director General Dr. Mzalendo Kibunjia would foot for journalists’ bills at a luxurious hotel in Nyali Mombasa after they munched on food and drinks uninvited.
In the Law Society of Kenya conference the journalists were covering , they were to wait for special invite and meal cards from the organisers of the conference but because of their shameless behaviours they were at the front of the que serving full plates.
They were ordered to pay later, and to their surprise they remained with their eyes wide open until Dr. Kibunjia who was attending the conference went to their rescue cooling their pumping hearts down.
