Businessmen in Changamwe, Mombasa are counting losses following a huge fire that destroyed property worth millions of shillings in the area.

The fire erupted after power supply went off and it was later restored according to the businessmen and women.

The Tuesday inferno started in one of the gas supply shops in Mwangaza area, Magongo, Changamwe and spread fast to other shops and 16 residential houses.

According to Changamwe OCPD Joseph Kavoo, locals and the traders did not salvage most of their valuables as the huge fire could not be immediately put out.

“It took about an hour for the Mombasa County, Moi international Airport and the Mombasa port fire fighters and the public to manage the fire,” said Mr. Kavoo.

The residents affected have appealed to well-wishers to help them with humanitarian aid as they did not rescue any of their belongings.

“Most of the residents living in the area were at work while their children at school as well so they were left homeless and with nothing,” said Kavoo.

He however, said the cause of the fire is still unknown as investigations to establish the root is still underway.
