A huge inferno has gutted down property worth over 20 million shillings in Lamu county.

The Wednesday mid-morning fire is said to have resulted from burning of garbage near one of the houses.

At least five houses including workshop at Tusitiri area within Lamu Island were reduced to rubbles.

Lamu County Disaster Management Committee Chief Officer Athuman Abdulaziz said they opted for the Indian Ocean water to put out the fire since the nearby borehole was completely dry.

“Our emergency response fire engine could not pass through the small path and we quickly opted for the Indian ocean waters,” said Mr. Abdulaziz.

Among the property destroyed were electronics, fridges, beds, generators among many other valuable items.

“We did our best to salvage the situation but the loses counted were huge,” he reiterated.

No one was injured during the incident, as the businessmen continue counting losses.
