Former Kwale Rep. Zainab Chidzuga to be buried on Friday

Former Kwale Woman Representative Zainab Chidzuga who died at the Agha Khan hospital in Nairobi of suspected COVID-19 complications will be laid to rest on Friday.

The body of the late Chidzuga will arrive at her Matuga home in Kwale county on Friday morning to be followed by prayers and later be buried at her Matuga home, in Kwale County after 1 pm prayers.

According to her elder son Hassan Chidzuga, his mother was hospitalised barely a week ago recovered from Covid-19 virus but later he experienced breathing complications and succumbed on Thursday at the Agha Khan hospital, Nairobi.

She has been in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Chidzuga served as the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chairperson in the ‘90s before becoming the first Kwale Woman Representative in 2013.

In 2017, she joined the Jubilee Party and lost the seat to current Kwale Woman Representative Zuleikha Hassan.

She was later appointed to serve various State boards by President Uhuru Kenyatta, and until her demise, Chidzuga was among the Kenya Oil and petroleum board of Directors.

In 2020 Mashujaa day Celebrations President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded Chidzuga with a Head of State Commendation.


Meanwhile President Kenyatta has sent a message of condolence to the family, friends and relatives of former Kwale County MP Zainab Kalekye Chidzuga.

Hon Chidzuga, an ardent supporter of the Jubilee administration and a former long serving official of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO), passed away on Thursday.

In his message of comfort, the President eulogised Chidzuga as a steadfast leader and astute grassroots mobiliser who helped uplift the welfare of women and youth in Kwale County and across the country through her many initiatives.

Deputy president William Ruto also said “We have lost a selfless and visionary leader who served the people of Kwale with dedication. Mheshimiwa Zainab Chidzuga was progressive, steadfast and focused. We will remember her as a champion of women empowerment,”.

He continued “We pray to God that He grants strength and comfort to the family, relatives and the people of Kwale County during this time of grief. Rest In Peace,”.

Ruto’s sentiments were echoed by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and his Kwale counterpart Salim Mvurya.

Joho said “Clouds of sadness hang over the Coast as we mourn the passing on of our beloved sister Hon. Zainab Chidzuga the former Kwale County Women Representative. She was a true champion who always stood up to improve the lives of the people of Kwale,”
