5 Mombasa hospitals to be shut over unqualified staff, poor sanitation

A task force comprising of health officials from the Health ministry will close down a total of five private hospitals within Mombasa County.

The officers will also shut down several unregistered chemist with unqualified pharmacists within Mombasa.

The officers led by Acting director of medical services Doctor Jackson Kioko on Thursday morning shut Seaside hospital a private health facility located at Ganjoni area within Mombasa island.

Dr. Kioko said the hospital lacked qualified staff and the few qualified did not poses any operating licenses to allow them provide health services to local.

The private hospital did not have an ample theatre with the required space for surgery.

“The hospital also lacked proper disposal systems or an incinerator despite offering various health services including maternity services,” noted Dr. Kioko.

The operation was launched in Kilifi County early Monday where after an inspection of 127 hospitals, 10 private hospitals we shut down.

“These hospitals were in a sorry state and did not qualify whatsoever to provide any health services to locals,” He added.

Dr. Kioko also led an operation within Mtwapa town in Kilifi where he shut down a total of 11 chemists that were operated by unqualified and unregistered people purported to be pharmacists.

The operations is being undertaken countrywide and will last for three months.

This comes in the wake of deaths in hospitals caused by unqualified health attendants.

The recent incidents occurred at Shalom Community hospital in Machakos County where in a disgusting occurence a pregnant woman was secretly captured giving birth at the hospital’s lobby while a nurse taking tea. The second incident a baby was over prescribed and died leading to a closure of the hospital.

The ‘health’ operation will cover all the six counties of the Coast region being Taita Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu.
