Health workers within the Coast region are calling in the government to prioritize on protecting them from Coronavirus threat.
The frontline workers who some have already contracted the disease are urging both the national and County governments to give priority to health and safety of health practitioners countrywide.
Kenya Medical Practioners and Dentist Union-KMPDU Coast region Secretary Dr. Abidan Mwachi says the two Governments have neglected health workers who are working under threats of contracting the virus.
Speaking in Kilifi after receiving Personal Protective Equipment- PPE’s from M-Pesa Foundation to protect Kilifi health workers as the Coronavirus bites in, Dr. Mwachi said health workers are at high risk if are left working without any protective gears.
He said when fully protected and their health given priority by the national and the county government, Doctors, Nurses and other health workers will focus more on protecting the public as well.
“The government is currently focusing more on reagents and other testing kits, let them know that reagents don’t treat patients, we do,” Dr. Mwachi said.
Dr. Mwachi who is also a resident Doctor at the Coast General Referral Hospital, urged Coast county governments to put more efforts in face-lifting the health sector.
“Over 6 health workers in Lamu have contracted Covid-19, our members in other Coastal counties are experiencing the same also, we should not find ourselves in such situations,” Dr. Mwachi reiterated.
On his part, Kilifi county health Chief Officer Dr. Bilal Madzoya said the PPE’s from Safaricom Foundation will help protect the county health workers while executing their daily activities in various hospitals in the county.
On his part M-Pesa Foundation CEO Les Baillie assured the health practitioners of fully support from the organisation especially during these hard times of Coronavirus pandemic.
