Mombasa County police Commandant Johnstone Ipara wants the Kenya National Highways Authority-KENHA and the National Transport and Safety Authority-NTSA to take legal action against a reckless driver who destroyed a section of the Dongo kundu by-pass on Wednesday morning.
Ipara said that the driver of the lorry was recklessly driving and on a high speed that led to the early morning accident that destroyed the barriers and shades of the Dongo kundu by-pass famously known as SGR road at Miritini area in Mombasa.
The driver who is currently receiving urgent medical attention at the Portreitz Sub-county hospital in Changamwe sustained serious injuries.
He was ferrying sand from Malindi before he lost control of the vehicle that veered off the road destroying part of the Dongo kundu by-pass.
“Such reckless drivers should be punished, the road cost the government millions of shillings, all motorists should be very conscious while driving through the SGR road,” noted Mr. Ipara.
He said that police will increase patrols along the newly built Dongo kundu by-pass to ensure motorists adhere to traffic rules.
Dongo kundu by pass was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta last year and has hugely contained major snarl-ups that were experienced along the Mombasa Nairobi highway especially at Mikindani, Jomvu and Miritini areas.
Most motorists heading to Nairobi from Mombasa have opted for the by-pass that connects Changamwe through Portreitz, the outskirts of Moi International airport to Bonje area that connects with the Mombasa Nairobi highway.
