Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has announced an 80% salary deduction to contribute to Coronavirus county prevention kitty.
Joho, while addressing journalists at his office on Thursday afternoon said together with his Deputy Dr. William Kingi and the County assembly speaker they have emulated President Uhuru Kenyatta’s move to take a pay cut in abid to enable the fight against Coronavirus in the country a success.
County Executive Members serving in the Joho’s government will take a 30 percent salary deduction while Chief officers heading various county departments will shelve off 20 percent of their salaries.
“We have willingly taken this step, Mombasa is at high risk of recording Coronavirus cases and we should put more efforts in taming the disease,” noted the County chief.
He urged other leaders to emulate the move since the disease demands a lot of resources and sacrifice to be completely quelled.
“I think it is time we all sacrifice in fighting this global pandemic, Coronavirus is real and we should all unite in containing it,” noted Joho.
Meanwhile the Governor has appealed to locals in Mombasa to strictly observe health guidelines so that they do not contract the disease.
He urged locals to observe high standards of hygiene by washing their hands with soap and water, use sanitisers and mostly practice social distancing.
During his public address on Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta disclosed that together with his Deputy William Ruto they will take an 80 percent salary cut.
He said other senior government officials including Principal Secretaries will also take a pay cut in a bid to enhance the fight against Coronavirus in the country.
