The Kenya Ferry Services should be properly financed so that it carries own with operations without any hitches.
The Senate Committee on Transport said that the Likoni Ferry Channel was very important to the country’s economy and that it should be properly financed so that the 24 hour operations at the channel run smoothly.
Speaking after a closed door meeting with the Kenya Ferry Services Director Bakari Khamis Gowa on Thursday evening, Senate Transport Committee Chair Kimani Wamatangi said that the channel was directly connecting Kenya with neighboring Country Tanzania and that a five minute technical hitch would cost the country losses.
“Just imagine over 400,000 people use this channel every day while over 6,000 vehicles highly depend on this channel, it should be properly funded so that it run its operations smoothly,” he added.
He continued, “The channel lack ablution rooms for locals as well as conducive places for people to sit as they wait for the next ferry, we should think of initiating such necessary services at the channel.
Wamatangi who is also the Kiambu Senator said that the government cannot spend Ksh. 400 billion in constructing the Standard Gauge Railway and fail to spend few more billions in improving services at the Likoni ferry channel.
He said that the channel was very important in the country’s economy as the tourist and transport sectors were hurt whenever the channel develops technical hitches.
He said that frequent check-ups of the ferries operating at Likoni channel and proper infrastructure in both the Mombasa Island and the Likoni ferry mainland were very important in improving service delivery.
Wamatangi said that the Committee will compile its recommendations to the government for implementation.
