A student at Shimba hills in Kwale County has committed suicide after he was allegedly punished by a teacher.
The student at Stephen Kanja secondary school in Shimba hills Kwale County is said to have been punished and sent away from school by a teacher.
The incident caused overnight protests within the school on Thursday evening and early Friday morning the school was indefinitely closed and student sent home.
A parent, Nick Waita said the overnight rampage prompted the school management to close the school for unknown period of time.
“After learning that their colleague committed suicide after he was sent home, the students went on rampage through out Thursday night,” he said.
They destroyed school property demanding an answer from the responsible teacher.
The school is yet to give out any official statement following the death of the student.
The student is said to have arrived home at Majimboni village in Shimba hills, took a rope and hanged himself.
Police have been deployed at the school compound to keep guard for fear of more destruction by the students who were ordered out of the school compound on Friday morning.
Officials from the Ministry of education in Kwale County have visited the school to pursue the matter.
Meanwhile police officers have launched investigations over the death of the student.
