A Lamu police officer was on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment after Lamu court validated all the evidence provided.

Police constable Rodgers Ouma raped a 26 year old lady at Langoni police line on December, 8 2019 when the women went to seek help at the police station

Lamu Chief Magistrate Allan Sitati Temba told the court that Ouma raped the desperate lady several times in his house.

The woman had gone to Langoni police station to report a case where her husband allegedly forced her to abort unwanted pregnancy.

“The officer misused his powers and office to sexually abuse the innocent lady who sought assistance trusting the police would help,” noted Mr. Sitati.

Sitati termed Ouma as a dangerous person who should never be allowed back into the society.

“Am at no exception but to punish the offender, he is a dangerous sex pest who poses major society threat,” Mr. Sitati told the Lamu court.

He warned anyone in the community with such behaviors to stop as the justice system remains vigilant in Lamu.

Justice served

Meanwhile Lamu rights defenders have commended the ruling saying it met their expectations.

Haki Africa Lamu County Coordinator Yunus Isaack Ahmed said the jail term serves as a warning to sex offenders who have been silently killing the society.

Mr. Isaack said justice has been served urging the justice actors not to relent in taming sexual violence in the county.

“Lamu County has experienced an increase in sexual violence, most of the cases involve close family members and public officers,” noted Mr. Isaack.

He called for unison in the fight against sexual violence and other forms of gender based violence in the county.
