Lamu divers in efforts to rescue a drowned fisherman

Rescue operations are underway to rescue a youth who drowned in the Indian Ocean during fishing activity on Friday afternoon.

The incident occured at Kizingitini area in Lamu East, where the youth had accompanied other fishermen to the Ocean to search for lobsters.

Kenya Maritime Authority Lamu County official Alex Munga said Mohammed Mbwana went to the Indian Ocean on Friday afternoon never to return.

“We are involving the Kenya Navy, The Kenya maritime authority officials, Lamu divers and the Kenya Red Cross Society, Lamu County to rescue the man,” said Mr. Munga.

The search has been ongoing for the better part of Friday afternoon.

The multi-agency team has employed all the avenues to rescue the young man.

“I want to reiterate that fishermen and any other person going to the Indian Ocean should exercise caution and the Ocean is experiencing strong tides,” said Munga.
