Lamu pupil succumbs to snake bite

A pupil at Jipendeni Primary school in Witu area, Lamu county has died after she was bitten by a snake.

Pendo Katana aged 15 years and a Jipendeni Primary school Grade 2 pupil was bitten by a Puff udder on Friday and she was rushed to the Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital for urgent treatment.

She was heading to school and rushed to their nearby shamba to get herself a piece of sugarcane when she stepped on the Puff udder where she was bitten.

Her situation worsened forcing her parents and Jipendeni primary school Head Teacher Mr. Peter Mwangi to rush her to the Coast Provincial Referral Hospital for further medical examination.

“Since there was nothing much we could do, the minor succumbed at the Coast General Referral hospital in Mombasa.

We had no option but to bring her back for burial arrangements,” said a pained Mwangi.

He said the Minor’s body had started swelling after he was treated and discharged from Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital.

The family thought it was necessary to seek further treatment.

“Despite all these, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) should compensate the family for the misharp,” said Mr. Mwangi.

The minor will be laid to rest at their Witu home in Lamu.
