Lamu Senator Anuwar Loitiptip has called on the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an immediate probe on the embezzlement of 120 million shillings meant for NHIF fund for county workers.
Loitiptip further wants the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to quickly weigh into the matter and ensure all culpable individuals are netted and ordered to explain in how they spent the money.
Speaking at Mpeketoni in Lamu County on Friday, Mr. Loitiptip said he came to learn of the questionable 120 million shillings after many of Lamu county workers could not access treatment using their NHIF cards.
According to Anuwar, the Lamu county government staffs have been denied treatment within various hospitals in and outside Lamu county with the hospitals claiming the names of the beneficiaries are not in the national hospital insurance fund systems.
Mr. Loitiptip urged the two government institutions to quickly move and initiate and ugent query on what transpired within the county government of Lamu.
“I am calling on the immediate arrest of Lamu County Governor Fahim Twaha, the County Health Executive Member Dr. Anne Gathoni, County NHIF Coordinator Abdulaziz Mwendwa and Finance Executive member Mr, Mohammed Bute so that they tell us how they spent the money,” noted Mr. Loitiptip.
The youthful Senator also noted with concerns how Lamu county workers have suffered after being forced to pay for their treatment despite being subjected to the statutory NHIF deductions.
“My core mandate as the County representative at the Upper house is to oversee the proper use of resources and for the intended purposes, I will not at any point condone corruption in the Lamu County government,” revealed Mr. Loitiptip.
He has vowed to pursue the matter until Lamu residents are fully aware of the embezzlement of the 120 million shillings NHIF fund.
The allocation was made in the 2018/2019 financial year.
