An emergency break from a police escort vehicle on Sunday injured 11 passengers heading to Mombasa from Lamu.
The police vehicle escorting a convoy of public transport vehicles from Lamu to Mombasa made an abrupt stop for the occupants to get some miraa (khart) from a vehicle that was heading to Lamu from Mombasa, on Sunday mid- morning.
The emergency break forced other vehicles in the convoy to make an abrupt stop too which the Tawakal bus driver could not manage forcing the vehicle to overturn.
“If you are a driver or you have an experience in the road, you will understand that no matter how you may try to save the situation, a bus can’t be compared to small cars that can easily make an emergency stop,” noted Mr. Abdallah Hemed, the driver of the Tawakal bus.
The police officers with other passengers rushed the survivors to Witu hospital where they are receiving treatment.
A young girl is said to have broken her hand during the accident.
Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed the accident saying no fatalities were reported.
However, he cautioned road users to be very careful while using the Garsen-Witu-Lamu road.
