A minor is fighting for his life at the Coast General Referral Hospital in Mombasa after he sustained serious injuries while playing with an Improvised Explosive Device at Changamwe in Mombasa.
The young boy together with his peers were playing at a nearby dumpsite at Msikiti Noor area within Changamwe constituency when they picked one of the explosives unknowingly and started playing with it.
The IED blasted seriously injuring the boy’s face.
According to Changamwe OCPD Joseph Kavoo, neighbours around the garbage collection point who heard the blast rushed to rescue the children confirmed one of them had sustained serious injuries.
His face was almost disfigured according to security agencies.
The neighbours rushed the minor to the Portreitz Sub-county hospital but was referred to the Coast General Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.
“The boy was seriously injured on the face and we hope the doctors will save him from further injuries,” noted Mr. Kavoo.
Police have immediately cordoned off the area cautioning those neighbouring it to stay away as combing of the area continues.
Kavoo said the explosives have been handed over to detonators experts for further examination.
Meanwhile Kavoo has cautioned parents to be extra careful and monitor their children whenever outside playing with peers.
He said some parents have completely neglected their children living them to scavenge for whatever they get on the streets and dumpsites, saying the trend is very worrying.
He cautioned parents against abandoning their children urging them to fully play their roles in protecting the young ones.
