The Mombasa County environment department has closed down the undesignated Changamwe dumpsite.
The County government took the action after receiving locals’ complaints over the fastest growing dumpsite in the area.
Barely a week ago, the locals complained over the illegal dumping that was being done by non-locals and especially unauthorised garbage collectors within Changamwe, Chaani, Portreitz, Magongo among other areas of the Changamwe mainland West.
“It started as a simply garbage collection point, only to be come a major dumpsite,” said a resident Elizabeth Onyango.
The illegal dumping was being done at Mainland area along the Changamwe-Magongo- Miritini Road.

However, the Mombasa County government Environment department after receiving the complaints moved and cleaned the area.
The officials further warned of any dumping in the area saying whoever caught will be punished.
The county designated Mwakirunge, in Kisauni Subcounty as the only dumping site in the county.
The county government also shut Kibarani dump site that has now been turned to a beautiful recreational facility.
Recently, the County environment department said only authorised garbage collectors will be allowed to work with the county government in managing solid waste in the county.
Mombasa County Executive Member in charge of Environment Godfrey Nato said some youth engaging in solid waste management have been accused of reckless dumping.
