One person succumbed after a boat he was travelling in capsized at Mkupe area in Miritini, Mombasa County.

The boat was ferrying workers constructing the Dongo Kundu bridge connecting Mombasa and Kwale counties.

The boat was carrying a total of 12 staffs.

The ten were rescued, one body has been recovered while search operations are still ongoing for the missing person.

According to Changamwe OCPD Joseph Kavoo the dawn accident occurred when the workers were crossing to Mombasa from Mkupe, Kwale County side.

He said the boat could not sustain the heavy Indian Ocean tides.

“People need to be very careful. The ocean is experiencing heavy tides following weather change,” noted Mr Kavoo.

Multi-agency team involving Mombasa disaster management team, The Kenya Read Cross Society divers, Kenya Maritime Authority rescue officials, Kenya Navy, Kenya ports Authority and fishermen are currently searching for the missing person.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the Coast General Referral Hospital morgue.
