A Mombasa based youth lobby has cautioned parents in the county against leaving their responsibilities only to subject minors to societal evils.
Stretchers Youth Organisation which has been implementing comprehensive sexuality education in the county says children are exposed to irresponsible sexual behaviours and other unethical issues in the society since most parents are ‘too busy’.
Speaking at Changamwe in Mombasa, the organisation’s Executive director Dickson Okong’o said parents have entrusted boda boda riders, house maids and boys and other extended relatives to take care of their children.
According to Okong’o parents should be very keen and in most cases take their own children to school instead of entrusting a third party.
“You hand them to boda boda riders, as parents you don’t inquire anything about the boda boda operators when they return your children in the evening, what do you expect?” noted Okong’o.
He cautioned parents urging them to be fully involved in their parenting roles.
“Teachers are not your house maids they are meant to teach your children and not bringing them up, own up your roles as parents and safeguard your child’s future,” he disclosed.
The youth activist noted that the recent high pregnancy rate in Mombasa is as a result of poor parenting among many parents in the county.
In 2018, Mombasa recorded 8,034 early pregnancy cases that were registered in public health facilities in the county.
However, gender and children’s rights activists have raised concerns that the data may be high since most cases go unrecorded and are solved under family set-up.
Efforts are being implemented to tame the situation according to Mr. Okong’o.
