Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir has ascribed the youthful drug addiction in Mombasa to poor parenting.
The legislature said parents have completely failed in it taking their responsibilities seriously thus subjecting their children to pathetic choices in life.
Speaking in Mombasa, Nassir expressed concerns over drug addiction among school going children.
He called on parents to closely monitor their children, guide them to the right path and always ensure they remain in school.
The lawmaker blamed parents for always defending the wrongdoing of their children.
He said defending minors for wrong doing is actually tarnishing their future dreams.
“I am disappointed, how can parent accord their children such extreme freedom at a very tender age? How on earth can children control their parents?” posed the MP.
He called for continuous grassroots engagement forums in Mombasa and beyond to push parents to embrace good parenting that cares for children.
“As parents we are fond of defending our children and choose to be blind until the situation worsens,” he added.
Nassir said the forums will enhance good parenting among parents in the region.
The Mvita MP however urged youth to focus more in safeguarding their future instead of indulging in drugs and crime.
He called on the youth to join tertiary institutions and embrace self reliance.
