Police in Mombasa on Saturday morning killed five suspected criminals in Mbungoni area within Nyali Sub-county.

Nyali police Boss Daniel Mumasaba said the five suspects have been hiding in a single room in the area.

He said one AK-47 firearm and several rounds of ammunition were recovered during the fierce dawn gunfire exchange between the suspects and police.

Several mobile phones stolen from locals were also recovered as well as machetes, pangas and other assorted weapons.

Police also recovered one motorcycle used by the suspects to execute their robberies in Mombasa and Kwale counties.

“These suspects are behind the killing of a lady who used to operate an M-Pesa shop along Moi Avenue in Mombasa in August, 2020,” revealed Mr. Mumasaba.

He said the criminal gang has been terrorising locals within Mombasa and especially in Likoni, Kisauni and Changamwe areas.

“After stealing or killing innocent locals the gang goes into hiding in the neighbouring country, Tanzania through Lungalunga border and police have been trailing it,” he further revealed.

Mumasaba however could not confirm whether one of the gang member is a local clergy in the area though he said investigation into the matter in underway.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Coast General Referral hospital morgue.
