Police in Likoni are detaining 11 members of the criminalised Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).
The 11 were arrested while holding a meeting at Maweni area in Likoni Sub county.
Likoni Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Richard Koywer said the eleven were rounded by police at around 1 pm on Friday afternoon while secretly holding their meetings in an isolated area.
“The members are aged between 34 and 68 years,” said Mr. Koywer.
Koywer said the 11 completely ignored health protocols put by the Ministry of health in fighting the spread of Covid-19 and will face several charges before court on Monday, May, 3, 2021.
“Though they were not armed during the arrest, they all possessed special MRC identification cards,” Mr. Koywer further revealed.
He said they will all remain under police custody until Monday when they will appear before court.
They 11 have been transffered to Bandari police station.
The Mombasa Republican Council, was criminalized and banned by the government about a decade ago with its members including its President Omar Mwamnuadzi, Chairperson Salim Mraja, Secretary General Randu Nzai among others charged before court.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko bailed them out.
The leaders went mute since then.
However, MRC seem to be resurfacing and according to the police it might be restructuring its roots in Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa counties.
