ODM leader Raila Odinga has said that he will not favour or endorse any aspirant in the Mombasa County gubernatorial seat.
Raila stood his ground telling Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir and investor cum politician Suleiman Shahbal to battle it out during ODM’s nominations.
Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday, Raila said the party will hold transparent primaries before the 2022 general elections and the two will have to face each other for the ODM certificate.
The ODM leader while addressing supporters in Mombasa said the party always roots for democratic party primaries and nothing will change that.
“Mombasa residents will decide on who they want between all who will fight for the Governorship seat,” said Raila.
However, Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki defended Nassir as a loyal ODM Member who selflessly contributed for the growth of the party.
Faki said the Mvita MP is better placed clinching the Mombasa Gubernatorial seat compared to any other party member.
“We do not need any replacement and we already know who our candidate is as a political party,” said Faki.
He said there is no way loyal ODM members can be replaced by new members who have less contributed to the growth and stability of the party.
Recently politician Suleiman Shahbal returned to ODM after ditching the party in 2013.
Shahbal vowed to battle for the Mombasa top seat on an ODM ticket, an announcement that has since created strong political enmity between Shahbal and Nassir.
The two Mombasa gubernatorial candidates will face other aspirants among them Kisauni Member of Parliament Ali Mbogo and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar Sarai in the 2022 political battle.
