Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has officially joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which is associated with Deputy President William Ruto.
Waiguru who met Ruto at his Karen residence in Nairobi on Tuesday cited pressure from supporters and popularity of the Bottom-Up Economic Model as factors that informed her decision.
The first term Governor had been sending signals that she would abandon the ruling Jubilee Party after the courts declared the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) constitutional amendment process she supported as null and void.
The latest move will see Waiguru defend her gubernatorial seat on the UDA party ticket where she is likely to face Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Purity Ngirichi who has been a key ally of the Deputy President.
“After extensive consultation with the Kirinyaga people, I have officially decamped to the Hustler nation,” she said.
She was accompanied by at least 23 Members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly.
“As a team, we will walk United so as to achieve development and growth for our people through the bottom up economic model,” she added.
The Governor, who is seeking to defend her seat in 2022, was welcomed to the ‘Hustler movement’ on Tuesday morning following a meeting with DP Ruto at his official residence in Karen.
Governor Waiguru’s political allegiance has in the recent remained a subject of speculation, after she stated that defending her seat on a Jubilee ticket would be an uphill task.
She claimed that the Mt Kenya region is dissatisfied with how the party has been run over the last five years.
While Waiguru had remained tight-lipped on her next political move, she had earlier given an indication that she was considering joining the DP Ruto-led political movement.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how Waiguru will battle it out with her political rival, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Ngirici, who is also in UDA and is seeking to defeat her and become Governor in 2022.
