Mombasa’s only Wiper Party Legislature Ali Mbogo’s gubernatorial bid now hangs in the balance after the party cleared former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko to vie for the Mombasa top seat.

Wiper National Election Board Vice Chair Agatha Solitei disclosed that Sonko will battle with Mbogo in the Party primaries.

“Sonko has presented himself as a candidate in Mombasa Governor’s race and we have forwarded the names to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. Yes Sonko presented himself as a candidate in the Mombasa Governor’s race,” Ms Agatha stated.

On March, 22 this year, Sonko decamped from Jubilee to Wiper in a bid to revive his political career after his bitter impeachment.

After he decamped to Wiper Party, which is an affiliated party of the Azimio la Umoja political movement, Sonko was officially received by the Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

The former Nairobi Governor is facing numerous criminal charges including several corruption cases, assault, and terrorist-linked offences.

However, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has defended Sonko saying he has the right to be handed the party ticket since he has not been charged with a crime.

He said Sonko has not been proven guilty of any graft related charges.
