Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned.
Elachi tendered her resignation letter on Tuesday morning citing life-threatening incidences.
He place has been taken by her Deputy who is also Ruai Member of the County Assembly John Kamangu in acting capacity.
In her televised resignation statement addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Elachi said,
“I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta. For the last few days there have been life-threatening incidences. I appoint my Deputy speaker, John Kamangu as acting speaker,” she said.
She thanked the President and noted that Nairobi will thrive under the stewardship of the newly-constituted Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS).
Kamangu and Elachi have received strong opposition and criticism from Nairobi MCA’s who accused them of corruption, illegal appointments, victimisation of MCAs and assembly staff among many other accusations.
Earlier, Elachi suspended assembly sittings to September after she was notified of her impending impeachment.
However, MCA’s allied to Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko says the impeachment motion will proceed despite her resignation.
