The strong rivalry between Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir and businessman cum politician Suleiman Shahbal has finally come to an end.
The two strong opponents in the Mombasa political scene have been finally been tamed by the ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga who says after in-depth deliberations, Shahbal has decided to shelve his ambitions in favour of Nassir.
“After lengthy deliberations Suleiman Shahbal has stepped down in favour of Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir. We want to ensure we clinch the seat,” said Raila.
Raila’s statements put to an end the speculations surrounding the ODM party on who would be handed the nominations certificate between Nassir and Shahbal, with Nassir singled out as most loyal ODM member.
The deliberations also involved the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance Chairperson President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In his long statement, Shahbal said though he has for the last decade been struggling to clinch the top seat, he agreed to support Nassir and promised maximum corporation in all the political campaigns Nassir will be conducting in Mombasa.
Shahbal reiterated that it has been his dream to bring change and development in Mombasa, however, he has shelved his ambitions for the top seat.
“Today, after thoughtful consideration of the needs and aspirations of the people of Mombasa, long deliberations with my Party Leader Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga and advise from the Chairperson of Azimio La Umoja Coalition President Uhuru Kenyatta, I hereby announce that I have dropped my gubernatorial bid in support of my brother Abdulswamad Nassir,” Shahbal reiterated, however, the body language was telling it all, unhappy man.
Shahbal pledged to work with Nassir for the future and development that would make Mombasa remain top county in the country in terms of development.
“Mombasa is bigger than all of us, and therefore, this collective and pensive decision is aimed at uniting Mombasa and ensuring we all put the interests of Mombasa residents at heart and prioritise them,” he revealed.
The businessman cum investor will now join the Azimio la Umoja Coalition campaigns at the National Level.
“It is my hope, ambition, and desire to work with our Party Leader Raila Odinga in any capacity that I can to ensure he becomes the next President. I am confident and I believe we will achieve that objective,” said a vividly pained Shahbal.
He went on “Furthermore, I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all my supporters for standing with us since we started our campaigns to date. I do not take your efforts for granted, I appreciate all that time you spent campaigning for us for the governorship position and I now plead and humbly request that we put the focus and energy of our campaigns towards ensuring ODM grabs all the seats in Mombasa,”
On his part, Nassir thanked Shahbal for agreeing to support his gubernatorial bid promising to always value his efforts and work with him to achieve the developmental agenda for Mombasa residents.
