Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has finally bid Wiper Party which in the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance farewell and officially joined the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Sonko has been hinting on the move especially after his efforts to vie for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat recently hit a snag after the supreme court bundled him out of the Mombasa governorship race over integrity issues.
Recently Sonko mentioned that he will fully back United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Mombasa governorship candidate Hassan Omar Hassan instead of ODM Candidate Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir who is also the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance candidate.
Sonko while being interviewed during TV-47 Prime news bulletin said there was no way he could support Azimio candidate in the Mombasa gubernatorial race, a sign that he was almost ditching the political alliance whose presidential candidate is ODM leader Raila Odinga.
On Friday, photos surfaced showing Sonko shaking hands with Deputy President William Ruto, officially announcing his exit from the Azimio coalition.
His final step end speculations that have since surrounded his political journey especially after his efforts to be included in the Mombasa governorship race was thwarted by the courts.
Sonko has since taken his appeal to the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) seeking to be included in the Mombasa gubernatorial race.
However, with only 9 days remaining to the August, 9 general elections, the former Nairobi governor may have learnt of the slim chances left and left Wiper Party and the entire Azimio-One Kenya political alliance.
“It is with a heavy heart that I come to you this morning. You all know what has been going on and how I have been pushed to the wall trying to do my best for you my people of Mombasa. Time is not on our side and I have had to sit down as a leader, think about what would be the best for my people and I have come to the realisation that I should work with a government that shares the same vision for my people as I and one that benefits them. It is not about Sonko now, I have to think about the people of Mombasa and their future. I will not be leaving my brother Hon. Ali Mbogo behind, who has been put to suffering by those fighting me, and therefore from the positions offered I will also consider him” Sonko posted on his social media handles.
He wished Wiper Party Leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and President Uhuru Kenyatta best of luck in their future endeavors.
According to the agreement, between Sonko and Kenya Kwanza Alliance, he will secure Cabinet Secretary job incase Ruto becomes the 5th President or Principal Secretary or he can get an ambassadorial job as well.
The Deputy President welcomed Sonko stating that Kenya Kwanza is the winning team.
