Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant cum investor Suleiman Shahbal says he demands nothing less than free, fair, just and verifiable party primaries for the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

Shahbal says the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) should embrace democracy in the party and conduct nominations for the Governor’s race.

Suleiman Shahbal, Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir and current Mombasa Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi are battling for the ODM ticket.

However, the tough race seems to be between Nassir and Shahbal, as recently reports indicated that Nassir was to be issued direct ticket and that Mombasa county will not conduct primaries for the gubernatorial battle.

Recently, Shahbal urged the party to avoid dishing out direct ticket to any of the aspirants but instead conduct polls to ensure the winner is issued with the certificate.

“We dot fear nominations, furthermore our opponent was recently named the best candidate by an Infotrack poll with a whooping 58 percent and we were listed with a little 18 percent, why the fears now,” reiterated Shahbal.

Democracy

According to the politician, the ODM party will be killing its own democracy by sidelining aspirants and favouring few.

“We support our Party Leader Raila Odinga and his efforts to build a strong ODM party, why are all these efforts being trashed with some only aiming at disintegrating the gains,” he divulged.

The Mombasa Gubernatorial candidate noted that he will not accept anything less than fair nominations so that the best candidate can be issued with the certificate in transparent manner.

“I am ready to support my opponent if they win the nomination, however only if and when the exercise is conducted in a transparent and democratic manner,” reiterated Mr Shahbal.

Shahbal is making his third shot for the Mombasa top seat after losing to the incumbent Ali Hassan Joho in the in 2013 and 2017 general election.

The politician cum investor seems to be giving it all so that he triumphs in the August, 9 general election.

On the other hand, the Mvita MP has been termed the most loyal ODM party member and Raila’s close ally.

Despite earlier remarks by Raila that only Mombasa residents will decide who their governor would be, recent unfolding have seen the ODM party leader closing the gap between him and Nassir and widening that of Shahbal.

However, Shahbal demands nothing less than free, fair, just and verifiable Mombasa gubernatorial nominations.
