Kilifi governor Amason Jeffa Kingi has said that Coast leaders will only support the referendum if the whole process touches on basic Coastal issues.

Kingi said that Coast people will unite and support the referendum if the matters directly cater for Coastal people including fair distribution of resources.

Speaking at a leadership forum in Mombasa organised to deliberate about the Building Bridges Initiative-BBI, Kingi said that Coast residents will reject the referendum if matters included will discriminate against them.

“We will only succeed in pushing for our Coast agenda when we are united, at the moment we politically incompatible,” he said.

Kingi said that it has been the trend where Coast residents play upcountry politics completely lacking Coast self political stand.

“We have Coast residents who belong to Raila Odinga, another cluster that belong to President Uhuru Kenyatta, others for Deputy President William Ruto, where will our people focus or realign themselves with?” posed Kingi.

On his part, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho called for unity and unified political bargaining power for all Coast residents.

He said that the region was better placed in political bargaining power but it lacked unity.

“We should be extra careful about 2022 politics, let’s draw our strategy properly before making early decision that may be detrimental to our political and development agenda,” he noted.

The Building bridges Initiative famously known as ‘Handshake’ joint committee is expected at the Coast from next week where it will engage locals and receive their views on how successful it can execute its uniting the nation mandate.
