Mombasa may expect a fierce political battle in the race to inherit Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho.
The recent emotional reactions at Tononoka social hall where Businessman cum politician Suleiman Shahbal was meeting his supporters who evidently opposed his exit in the Mombasa gubernatorial race signals a different unpredictable political scenario in Mombasa.
The Tuesday meeting witnessed strong opposition from Shahbal supporters who asked him to go independent for the Mombasa gubernatorial race, however Shahbal did not accept or reject the request.
An in fact in the evening during an Iftar dinner at Serani grounds in Mombasa, Shahbal was seen together with Abdulswamad sharing food at the same table.
However, the Mombasa political scene may take a different twist with the entrance of former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
Sonko may decide to pair -up with Kisauni Legislature Ai Menza Mbogo to battle the opponents among them Mvita Member of Parliament and Mombasa gubernatorial candidate on ODM ticket Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP) candidate Hezron Awiti Bolo, UDA’s Hassan Omar Sarai among other aspirants.
The battle maybe be tough than expected.
Recently, Mbogo said he is the Wiper’s flagbearer in the Mombasa gubernatorial race, though he did not make public who is his running mate.
“Treat any other information as mere rumours. I was handed the interim Wiper ticket to run for Mombasa gubernatorial seat and not Sonko,” noted the Kisauni Lawmaker.
Sonko is yet to respond to such remarks, despite a section of Wiper party leaders stating clearly that Sonko has all the rights to vie for the Mombasa top seat.
With the Mbogo-Sonko factor, Kisauni and Mombasa at large may witness a serious and fierce political battle than never before.
The wiper Party is yet to clear the air on who between Mbogo and Sonko will carry the mantle for the Mombasa gubernatorial race, but only time will tell.
