Property worth million of shillings was on Friday afternoon destroyed after fire reduced hardware and general stores in Mombasa into rubbles.
The fire destroyed Mamujee hardware and general stores along Moi Avenue in Shimanzi area that stores paints and other building materials.
Fire fighters from Mombasa County government, Kenya ports Authority, Kenya Navy and a privated organisation Jaffery Foundation battled the fire for more than five hours.
The huge fore could not be easily contained and the six fire engines made endless trips to contain the bursting flames.
Earlier reports indicated that Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho’s Auto port Container stores was also gutted down but police denied such reports.
General Service Unit officers, the Administration police and other security agencies remained vigilant to control the crowd that was building.
Mombasa County police commandant Johnston Ipara said that more details will be availed after the operation is officials called off.
Before going to the press as at 9 pm Friday evening, the fire fighters were still battling the heavy flames from the godown .
