People who use drugs at the Coast were left out of Huduma number registration exercise that closed its doors last Saturday.
Despite efforts from anti- drug activists to push the administration to employ ways of reaching them right at the drug dens, the efforts did not yield fruits.
Reachout Center Trust an anti- drug lobby based at the Coast said leaving out such group will cause them more problems in future especially when seeking services from public offices.
RCT Executive director Taib Abdulrahman said though some of those under recovery programs acquired the number, most of them were left out.
“Though we managed to register those already in our recovery programs, a considerate number of active drug users were left out of the exercise,” he said.
Registering drugs users remains a challenge
Though the anti-drug activist was in admittance that registering drug users in the National Integrated Information Management System-NIIMS was a challenge since most of those affected by drug addiction did not have any valid identification documents, he urged the government to assist them acquire identification cards.
“These people while in their recovering process, they should be assisted acquire identification cards without them going through a lot of tribulations,” noted Mr. Taib.
He urged Mombasa county Commissioner Evans Achoki to enable people who use drugs acquire NIIMS registration numbers.
County administration failed to assist drug users acquire NIIMS number
During NIIMS debate organised by Human Rights Agenda-HURIA at Mombasa women hall, Achoki said the government was going to consider all the concerns raised about Huduma number registration exercise.
This was after Taib enquired about government’s plan in ensuring people who use drugs are not left out of the exercise.
The NIIMS registration exercise that came to a close last Saturday after an additional one week over long ques is meant to enable the government put a central digital platform about all Kenyans.
It is also meant to tame insecurity in the country by curtailing foreign nationals illegally in the country.
