In a bizarre act, a middle aged man has been killed by a swam of bees in Majengo area, Mombasa county.

The Saturday evening incident shocked the area residents since there are no bee hives anywhere near the scene of incident.

According to police report, the deceased, John Mutwiri who works at the Coast regional KRA Investigations and Enforcement officer in Mombasa was in the company of two police officers Hezekiel Gikambi and Maurice Kinyua both attached to the Makupa police station.

“On reaching Majengo area just near the Red Brick hotel, a swam of bees invaded their car and attacked them causing serious injuries,” read part of the police report.

The three officers scampered for safety, however, Mr Mutwiri was overwhelmed by the bees at a nearby garage and collapsed.

“It took the efforts of locals led by Mwarua Chikophe who was working in the garage to help Mutwiri and they boarded a Tuktuk to the Coast Region Teaching and Referral Hospital, where Mutwiri was pronounced dead on arrival,” said police.

The incident which was reported at Makupa Police station left locals in shock and disbelief since Majengo is within Mombasa Island and there are no any bee keeping activities in the area.

The two police officers Gikambi and Kinyua are receiving urgent medical treatment at the Coastal Region Teaching and Referral Hospital while the body of Mutwiri was taken to the same hospital’s morgue awaiting autopsy.
