Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko failed to appear before Voi Court on Wednesday to answer to assault charges leveled against him.
Sonko is said to have kicked on the thighs Coast regional Police Commander Rashid Yakubu at the Ikanga airstrip in Voi on December 6.
He is alleged to have resisted arrest and assaulted and injured the Coast police Boss.
However, his lawyers Cecil Miller, Jared Magolo, Salim Mwadumbo and George Kithi presented before court doctor’s report that Sonko was suffering from chest pains and hypertension and that he could not make it to the chambers on Wednesday.
Mr. Kithi told the court that Sonko will appear before the court on any date set by the court from January, 2020.
Voi Senior Resident magistrate Frederick Mayaka set January 21st, 2020 as the hearing date of the case.
“We abide by the set date and the Governor will himself appear on that day,” Kithi told the court.
Security beefed up
Earlier, security was beefed up both inside and outside Voi law courts as supporters crowded the surrounding to see Sonko.
The Nairobi Governor is further facing 19 counts of corruption, abuse of office and irregular payments that led to loss of 357 million shillings.
He is out on a 15 million shillings cash bail.
He has since been barred from accessing his office pending hearing and determination of the corruption charges leveled against him.
