The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday 8 January confirmed that Egypt will host this year edition of African Cup of Nations slated for June.

The announcement came officially from the CAF after Egypt and South Africa submitted their formal bids showing interests  to host the finals following the original hosts Cameroon stripped of the rights as a result of lagging behind with the preparations.

Egypt received 16 votes to South Africa’s one, CAF confirmed in a press conference.

Egypt which was offered a reprieve though with the chance to host the next Nations Cup replaces Cameroon who were stripped of the hosting rights at the end of last year 2018.

Egypt, who won the Afcon trophy a record of seven times, will host the tournament for the third time in their history.

The Egypt football federation will have just six months to prepare for the 24 – team biennial continental showpiece scheduled for 15 June to 13 July.

Both Egypt and South Africa have extensive football facilities to host the tournament but reports suggest that there were reservations expressed about low South African attendance.

Turn outs in football matches has been reported to be on the low in South African stadia in recent years, including their national team Bafana Bafana matches, which could have had an impact on the country hosting a successful tournament.
